With FTP (file transfer protocol) you can upload files to the server. These files can then be downloaded by others, if they know where you have put these files.

The site administrator will need to set up your ftp username and password on the server before this can work. You'll also need to install an ftp program on your computer, here using "Leap".

Installing Leap on your Computer

- download the program, save it in a good place and unzip it.
- install by clicking on setup. finish set up.
- download the program here (821kb) - right-click, "save target as".

Site Set-up in Leap

- make a standard folder in your computer where you kalways keep the files that you upload to the server -this way you'll always know what's on the server

- find the program "Leap FTP" in the programs list or the shortcut on the desktop
--- if you can't find it, go to drive c, into the Program Files folder, and there you'll see LeapFTP. double click to open that folder. from the list right-click on LeapFTP.exe (the file with the logo of two computers) and choose "send to" ... "Desktop (create shortcut)". Now you've got the shortcut on your desktop.

- open LeapFTP and choose "Sites" from the top menu, then "Site Manager"
- click on "add group" on the lower left: give the group a name in the box that comes up: call it [Mine] or something like that
- then click on "add site" also on the lower left: give the site a name [uploads-myname] or something similar
- now on the right side enter the address: [sitename.com]
- below that add your username: [username]
- uncheck the "anonymous" box, the password field will become active
- enter the password: [password]
- local path: click on the questionmark and find the folder you created before: [foldername in you computer], click on the folder in your computer to make it blue and click ok - it will appear in the box
- for remote path type: /public_html/
- click on "apply" - the setup your ftp connection is now complete
- if you are on the internet, click "connect"

Connecting to the Server

Next time, no need for all of the above. when the program opens, just click on the big "FTP Server" button at the top left, choose [Mine], choose [uploads-myname] ... and it will connect to the server.

What you will see:

on the top left are the files in your computer, on the top right are the files on the server. the bottom left shows files that are uploading, the bottom right shows what is happening on the server.

To send a file to the server:

- first put the files that you want to send into the foldername on your computer] (with the Windows Explorer or My Computer or My Documents)
- connect to the internet
- start Leap, click FTP Server, [Mine], [uploads-myname], you'll see your files on the left
- select the files on the left that you want to send to the server (= upload): simple one click on the first file (if you make a double click on a file - it will immediately go to the server) , then click on the last file while holding shift button down - now they are all blue
- right click on any one of those blue files and choose "Upload" - the program starts to transfer the selected files to the server. This might take a while, but you can see the progress in the left bottom window.
- when finished, click top menu "Server" then "disconnect". always disconnect when finished (don't just shut down the program).

- you can delete files from your computer and from the server by selecting it (one click) and choosing "delete".

- to send a file from the server to your computer (= download), it's the same way, you just start on the right side window.

- after some time of not doing anything, the server will disconnect by itself, the right window will give you a message when it does that. To reconnect quickly, click top left menu "server" then "re-connect"

Sounds like a lot of instructions!!! Actually this is an instant way to send /share stuff without using email.
